The Five Sexes: Why Male and Female Are Not Enough

This article concerns men and women who have the physical and emotional characteristics of both sexes. Western society has always been very strict about assigning specific sexes: male and female, as well as with regards to the idea that heterosexual is normal, gay/lesbian is not. This rigid ideal presents great difficulty both physically and emotionally to anyone who does not or cannot conform to it.

Personally i cannot understand why we as a society are so uncomfortable with people who do not conform to the rigid male and female genders. Why have we been socialized to feel this way? Undoubtedly we have historically had people who do not fit strictly into either of these categories so it's strange to me that we are so uncomfortable with it. Accordingly i appreciate the Indigenous perspective that embraces male, female, and two spirited identities. I find it ironic that the "savages" actually have a better understanding of these concepts than the more civilized european.
